Adventure for All Seasons at Lake Eufaula, Oklahoma

Lake Eufaula State Park is located in Checotah, Oklahoma just south of Interstate 40. It’s a bit under two hours from OKC and a little over an hour from Tulsa, making it a great meet up spot or day trip venue.

Hiking!

The State Park offers multiple hiking/walking trails through the park (map). We first visited during early March and took the Hummingbird/Crazy Snake Loop and the Savannah Loop.

The Savannah Loop is a nicely wooded 1.3 mile trail that starts just across the street from the Park Office. It’s an easy, but very beautiful walk. It offers lots of birds, lake views and wildlife (we saw quite a few armadillos along the way). Since we visited during the rainy spring, we ran into some muddy areas was overall extremely nice.

The Hummingbird/Crazy Snake Loop is a relatively flat 2.4 mile loop that includes water views. This trail was pretty, but not my favorite in the area. A portion of the trail walks right along some power poles and although it’s pretty, it doesn’t quite feel as secluded as other options. It also felt a bit difficult to follow as it intertwined with the state park roads and other recreational areas. Any day spent outside is a good day, but next time I’ll pick a different trail or enjoy the Savannah Loop again.

Swim!

Lake Eufaula is also perfect for summer adventures in the water. We visited this August and got to enjoy the beautiful water. Rather than a day trip, we spent a few nights and needed an overnight option. Lake Eufaula State Park has campsites and RV sites, but also offers 3 yurts which I’d love to check out in the future.

For our trip, we opted for an AirBnb. We like to travel with our pup and wanted some quite lakefront access. This has been a great option for us to travel to pet-friendly abodes. At Lake Eufaula we stayed at the Rock Creek Cabin…. It …. was… Amazing!

As much as I love a state park cabin, this was an awesome stay. Our pup loved the big porch, we all took in gorgeous views and were able to swim off the private dock. The host provided kayaks and a paddle boat for easy adventure. It’s in a neighborhood so it’s not completely secluded, but the area was nice an quiet. The positioning of the cabin on the lot also offered a private feel and unobstructed views of the lake. We will unquestionably be back again!

No matter the season Lake Eufaula is a great outdoor option, providing trails, trees, fishing, boating, hiking and fishing.
