Keystone Ancient Forest: Hike Among Ancient Trees

Keystone Ancient Forest is a hidden gem in Oklahoma! Located just west of Tulsa, Oklahoma in Sand Springs, the forest covers 1,360 acres and according to their website has 500 year old cedars and 300 year old post oak trees.

Keystone Ancient Forest is not open to the public daily, so be sure to check their website to see the available dates for open hiking. The volunteers and trail guides are amazing! When we visited, I forgot to bring a walking stick but they had a plenty available to borrow. We would have been fine without one on the Frank and Childers Trails, but it came in very handy on the Wilson trail to help with the slopes and leave covered steps.

Trails:

There are three trails to enjoy, the Frank, Wilson and Childers Trails.

  • Childers – 0.60 mile path right at the entrance
  • Frank – 2.8 mile loop that splits off of Childers
  • Wilson – Difficult rated hike off the Frank trail

Frank & Childers – These Trails are connect and when walked together are about 3.5 miles total. This is an easy path with beautiful views near Keystone Lake.

Wilson – Although the Frank and Childers trails offer a refreshing view of Oklahoma nature, the Wilson Trail is amazing! The Wilson Trail is a more difficult hike and includes several steep slopes and challenging footpaths. But, if you are up for it, it’s well worth the amazing views of ancient trees and natural landscapes.

Be sure to check out website for Open Hike Days and enjoy the natural surrounding of Keystone Ancient Forest!
